There are different types of hose reels to choose from, each one has it’s own unique features and is suitable for different/multiple environments. We go deeper into the different types in other articles on this site, but here is a quick overview of the main types of hose reels:
Wall Mounted Hose Reels: These are fixed to an outside wall next to a water source (like an outside tap). This keeps them off the ground, saves space, and makes them easy to access and use. Many models have swivel brackets and this allows the hose to be moved in different directions.
Retractable Hose Reels: These utilize a spring loaded mechanism, allowing the hose to be pulled automatically back into it’s casing after use. This prevents tangling and kinks, makes them easy to use (no manual effort to pull back in), saves time, and as a result are a popular choice.
Automatic Hose Reels: The mechanics behind these are similar to a retractable hose, as they automatically pull back into the casing after use. The key difference is that they utilize either an electric or motorized system instead of a spring loaded mechanism.
Portable Hose Reels: These particular hose reels are built to be portable, meaning you can carry them around with you. They are constructed to be lightweight and compact for this reason (but some models are heavier). Due to their design, they tend to have shorter hoses, and are more geared towards smaller gardens.
Manual Hose Reels: The old school manual club. They have a simple design and construction, you just turn a handle to wind back the hose into this case. Due to their simplistic design, they are cheaper in price compared to other hose reels, and require less maintenance.
Hose Reel Carts: Are hose reels on wheels. In this design, the hose reel is mounted on a cart with wheels, meaning you can move them around large open spaces and terrains easily. The hoses are long, the wheels strong, making them great for larger gardens.
Industrial Hose Reels: These are built for more demanding environments and use cases. They are suitable for industrial work, factories, farming etc. They are built to last, have a higher price tag, and are prefect for more gruelling and challenging tasks.
It is worth nothing that different types of hose reels can overlap. For example, a wall mounted hose reel can also be a retractable hose reel (it can be mounted to a wall and has retractable mechanism).
